Keratin has become some what of a revolutionary hair care solution for unruly frizzy hair that seems impossible to tame. And although they work wonders for these hair types, keratin is not only limited to benefit such, but before we delve deep into its numerous benefits let's explore what keratin is and how exactly it works.
What is Keratin?
Keratin is a fibrous structural protein that is found in our hair, nails, and even in the structures of our skin. In the context of hair, keratin makes up the outermost layer known as the cuticle, serving as a barrier to our inner layers. Essentially it is a very important protein that provides strength and flexibility, giving our hair resilience and so it is less prone to damage. As a result it contributes to the overall appearance of the hair making it appear more smooth and shiny.
BUT, can this protective layer be damaged? Unfortunately the short answer is yes...
When we excessively use heated styling tools, chemical treatments, excessive exposure to the sun and sea and poor hair care practices, the keratin structure can become damaged leading to weak, brittle and dull hair. Luckily, we have keratin treatments which work to put the protein back into the hair, repairing damaged areas and smoothing the cuticle -PHEW!
What is in a keratin solution treatment?
A keratin solution is the primary product used during the treatment process. While specific formulations vary across brands and salons, they typically contain high concentrations of keratin, along with other ingredients such as, vitamins, amino acids, and conditioning agents. The keratin can be derived from both natural and synthetic sources. Synthetic sources are designed to mimic the components of natural keratin whereas natural sources are used from animal hairs and feathers. Both will offer benefits for the hair and so choosing between synthetic or natural is really down to personal choice. If you are looking for aftercare products with keratin in, it is advisable to research brands, look at the ingredients list, certifications and descriptions.
Ready for your salon treatment?
What to expect during your visit at Ebbe The Salon...
Preparation: The hair is washed with a clarifying shampoo. A clarifying shampoo is a type of shampoo designed to specifically remove build up of products and oils from the hair and scalp. The hair is then blast dried.
Application: The keratin smoothing solution is applied to dry hair, starting from the roots and working towards the ends. The processing time will take around 40 minutes.
Bonding: After the processing time, the hair is blow-dried to remove excess moisture and small sections of the hair are flat ironed to seal the keratin into the hair cuticle.
Final Styling: The hair is then rinsed again, blow-dried and styled to your liking.
Cool and Rinse: The hair is left to cool for a few minutes and then it is rinsed at the basin with water. A neutralising product designed to balance the PH of the hair and close the cuticle that was opened during the treatment process. This product is usually one specifically designed for the treatment process.
Aftercare is important!
To ensure longer lasting effects it is important to carry on caring for your hair post treatment.
We recommend washing your hair with luke warm water and use a product specifically formulated for keratin treatments and one that is sulfate free!
After washing, gently pat dry with a soft towel and avoid vigorous rubbing as this can cause frizz and damage. Apply a leave in conditioner or keratin-based serum to keep your hair moisturised, smooth and shiny! We love O&M's Frizzy Logic Shine Serum.
Use a wide-toothed comb or brush with soft bristles to detangle your hair gently, starting from the ends and working your way up to avoid causing breakage.
And because we are all-for that extra self-care and hair-care pampering, why not consider switching your pillowcase to a silk one, not only is this calming and cooling as you sleep, they also help minimise friction and protect your hair. DREAMY.
